BRIDGEPORT — Central and Harding high schools’ cafeterias and hallways will play a starring role this summer in the tween comedy film, “Homecoming Queen.”
The Board of Education approved the use of the school facilities for up to 21 days and will get a total of $29,449 for building rental, custodial and security fees. The board’s only caveat was for the administration to make sure the movie subject matter won’t embarrass the school district.
The movie stars Tiffany Thornton, Brandon Smith and Dee Wallace. Cast as the principal, Wallace may be best known for portraying the mother in the hit sci-fi movie, “E.T.” Thornton is the lead in the Disney Channel series, “Sonny with a Chance.” Smith is a co-star on the same show.
Jan Johnson-Goldberger, the director/producer of the movie, said the film follows the efforts by tomboy Lucy Randolph, played by Thornton, to win the title of homecoming queen and a $10,000 scholarship that goes with it. The screenplay was written by Rene N. Rawls.
Johnson-Goldberger said Sarah Donovan, a scout manager for J2 Films, checked out several high schools in the area as possible settings for the movie. “When I saw Harding, I fell in love with the architecture,” said Johnson-Goldberger, who was also looking for a locale in a diverse community.
At Central, the movie crew plans to use Kennedy Stadium, as well as a nearby laundromat.
Johnson-Goldberger said the film is being shot in Connecticut because of the tax credits
